Dr. Halil İbrahim Uzun, a faculty member of the Department of Food Engineering, was accepted to the “Prevention of food loss and food waste” and “Agrofood loss and waste management” working groups within the scope of the COST Action titled “Sustainable Network for agrofood loss and waste prevention, management, quantification and valorization (FoodWaStop).
Addressing the issue of food loss and waste (FLW), a global problem recognized by international governments and organizations, the FoodWaStop action is of vital importance in reducing food loss and ensuring nutritious food security for the growing world population in a sustainable manner. This goal is also in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Farm to Fork Strategy of the European Green Deal.
This multidisciplinary and multistakeholder European network aims to achieve the following objectives:
-Disseminate knowledge on food loss and waste in Europe and in Mediterranean countries outside Europe,
-Determine the rate of food loss and waste at critical points in the fruit and vegetable supply chain,
-Promote innovative technologies and sustainable management strategies to reduce and prevent food loss and waste,
-Support a circular bioeconomy by valorizing agri-food waste.
Dr. Uzun will contribute to raising awareness, developing sustainable management strategies and bringing innovative technologies to solutions to food loss and waste problems within the scope of this network. This initiative will benefit many stakeholders from farmers to consumers and will provide important data to guide decision-makers on the social and economic impacts of food loss and waste.
